Associated Families

John Scriver (Schriver) Green was born 25 July 1872 at High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. John accompanied his mother and stepfather to America in 1875. The family settled first in Pennsylvania, then headed west to Ft. Kearney, NE.  It is doubtful that they actually made it that far, since the fort had been abandoned several years before, and their timeline would have had them immediately turning around and heading back east to Rock Island, IL.  After living  in the Rock Island area for several years, the family  moved to Buck Grove, Crawford, IA.   He died 14 December 1941 at Platte, Charles Mix, SD.  He married Emma Florence Cruise in Buck Grove, Crawford, IA on 11 November 1896.  Emma was b: 14 Nov 1877 at Clarence, Cedar, IA and d: 27 July 1952 at Platte, Charles Mix, SD.  Her parents were Daniel David Cruise and Marcella J. Legg.  (note: Marcella's surname is recorded as Gage in the Iowa Marriages 1809-1992 database).

FAMILY STORY

John S. Green was a rural mail carrier at Buck Grove, IA for many years.  Emma acted as his substitute carrier.  The 1910 Census has them living in Crawford County, IA.  When they moved to South Dakota, they took the train to Platte, SD, where they then took horses and wagons to finish their trip to the farm west of Academy, SD.  They are listed as having farmed near Academy, Bijou Hills,  (1920 US Census) Vivian (1925 SD State Census & 1930 US Census), and back to Academy.  This information is taken from their family story in the Platte, SD 75th anniversary book.
